Lisa Sandercock is the school readiness lead for Derby’s children’s centres and responsible for co-ordinating the TALK Derby action plan across the city’s 10 children’s centres, having delivered Communication Counts training to over 60 staff.
Lisa says: “I truly value the importance of speech, language and communication for the essential foundation they provide for future learning and success. It is something I am passionate about and I want to take this opportunity to make a difference.”
“Our aim is to achieve Communication Friendly Status for all 10 of the city’s children’s centres. We want to have a well-trained workforce who have a good understanding of how to make the most of every learning opportunity to support children’s speech, language and communication. We also want develop parents’ knowledge and understanding of how they can use every day routines and activities to support their children’s language. And ultimately we want to work in partnership with parents and other professionals to improve outcomes around speech, language and communication for our children in Derby and ensure this remains embedded and sustainable in the future.”
Lisa’s interest in speech, language and communication is also personal. When her daughter was born 20 years ago, she required several operations and intensive speech and language therapy to be able to speak. Lisa says; “Watching her struggles and her successes ignited my interest in speech and language and the difference early identification and intervention can make."
