Will Turner

Will Turner is the Business Development Manager for Derby County Community Trust (DCCT) who are a partner in the delivery of educational improvement activity in the city. The Trust is part of Derby Opportunity Area, supporting a number of projects and leading on the Essential Life Skills project – This is Derby.

DCCT is involved in programmes in the city that enhance education - the improvement of education is one of the organisation’s key strategic outcomes. Will sees getting involved in TALK Derby as an opportunity to support a great initiative that contributes to common challenges and can make a difference. DCCT is fortunate to be associated with Derby City Football Club and, as a strong and trusted local institution, it can provide profile and reach to the right audiences.

Will and DCCT would like to see TALK Derby achieve its aims of improving the communication skills of young people, as this has been identified as a key underpinning factor of educational achievement. He would also like to see TALK Derby reach as much of the city as possible and become a key cog in education in Derby.

Will believes speech, language and communication are important as they are the bedrock of everything. They not only support good academic progress but, more importantly, they bond people and create the growth of individuals and communities. These skills support the development of overall well-being and in particular enhances mental well-being by improving our connections between each other. This is so important for children, their parents, grandparents and peers. It will help society to grow by helping individuals to learn better, socialise more and become more socially mobile.

Will became an Ambassador for the project because he believes in its aims and objectives and feels the successful execution of them can enhance the city as a whole. In particular, it will improve education and schools and have additional benefits of better well-being, improved aspiration and attainment and more community cohesion. He says that, by being an Ambassador, both he and the organisation he works for can offer advice, guidance and influence, whilst championing the success of the project.
